Different furniture types present different challenges. A leather sofa that took two people and a crowbar to get through the front door requires a different approach than a glass-top dining table. Here is how NP Movers handles the most common furniture types clients ask about.
Lounges, Sofas, and Sectional Suites
Upholstered furniture is vulnerable to scuffing, tearing, and compression damage during a move. NP Movers wraps sofas and armchairs in heavy-duty furniture blankets before moving them, with stretch wrap applied over the blanket to hold it in place during transit. For sectional suites, each section is wrapped individually. Modular sofas with removable legs have those legs removed, wrapped separately, and packed in a labelled bag secured to the piece.
Tight hallways and staircases are assessed before the move begins. For sofas that cannot be moved upright through a doorway, we assess whether the piece can be stood on its end, removed through a window, or disassembled and quote accordingly.
Dining Tables, Chairs, and Glass Tops
Dining table legs are removed where possible to reduce the profile and protect them from leverage damage during transport. Glass table tops are removed from the base, wrapped in furniture blankets and corner protection, and transported vertically in the truck, never laid flat under other items. Table bases are wrapped and transported separately. Dining chairs are stacked in matched sets with blankets between each chair to prevent scratching.
Wardrobes, Bed Frames, and Bedroom Furniture
Flat-pack and assembled wardrobes are typically disassembled before moving and reassembled at the destination. Solid timber wardrobes that were built in place are assessed and some can be moved intact on furniture sliders and blankets, others need partial disassembly. Bed frames are disassembled, with all bolts and fixings stored in a labelled bag taped to the headboard. Mattresses are protected in mattress covers and transported flat on a clear section of the truck floor.
Antiques, Heirloom Pieces, and High-Value Furniture
Antique and heirloom furniture requires more preparation time and different materials than standard items. NP Movers wraps these pieces in furniture blankets first, then adds a layer of bubble wrap for impact protection, then a final layer of stretch wrap to hold everything secure. Antique pieces are never stacked under other items in the truck. For extremely high-value pieces, additional transit insurance is available and quoted before the job begins.
Office Furniture - Desks, Filing Cabinets, and Reception Units
Office furniture often combines weight with fragility, a large executive desk may be solid timber but still have a veneer surface that marks easily. NP Movers treats office furniture with the same protective wrapping used for residential pieces. Filing cabinets are either locked with their contents in place for short moves, or emptied and packed separately. Reception counters and custom joinery are assessed individually, as they are frequently fixed to the floor or wall and require careful separation before transport.
